For most people, addiction to substance abuse is not an issue present in their daily life. For a great number of others, however, that is all they can think about. In 2007, over 38,000 were admitted into substance abuse treatment centers in the state of Washington.  6,411 were admitted for just alcohol abuse, leaving approximately 32,000 people who were admitted for some sort of drug abuse. Heroin, cocaine, meth, and marijuana all have significant presences in Washington and remain a problem for local law enforcement, and for the people themselves who are addicted.

Marijuana Addiction

Marijuana is the most commonly abused drug in Washington as well as the most available. 7,707 people (20.2%) people were checked into treatment for marijuana addiction, above the national average of 16.1%. Low quality marijuana is smuggled in from Mexico and higher quality marijuana is grown locally or smuggled into Washington from Canada.

Cocaine Addiction

While cocaine addiction is less prevalent in Washington, its presence is just as destructive. 2,163 people (5.7%) were admitted for smoking crack and another 763 (3.6%) went into treatment for snorting cocaine. Compared with the national averages of 9.4% and 3.7% this puts Washington's cocaine abuse below the national average. Within Washington, crack cocaine is most commonly used in lower income urban areas while snorted cocaine is consumed by a more middle-class demographics.
